ACL Foxhunt Rules

General

  1. The Foxhunt will begin at 7:00 PM CST (8:00 PM CDT) on the 2nd Saturday of each month. Maximum time for the hunt will be four (4) hours.
  2. Starting point is Harper Community College in Palatine, Illinois. Harper is located at Euclid Ave. and Roselle Road. All hunters must be present at the starting point at the start of the hunt.
  3. Boundaries are Rt. 173 to the North, Rt. 47 to the West, I-88 West of I-294 and I-290 East of I-294 to the South, and Route 43 South of 120, Route 41 North of Rt. 120 on the East. See the accompanying map. Chicago city limits are out-of-bounds. The Fox must hide within the boundaries stated above. The boundary is the center line of the boundary road.
  4. The Foxhunt Chairman shall control the entire hunt and be the sole referee of the Foxhunt.

The Fox

  1. Must transmit on 146.985 Mhz, +/- 1 Khz. Minimum 1 watt ERP. He must identify with his callsign, and transmit clear, intelligible, narrow band (5 Khz) FM.
  2. Must be heard by more than 50% of the hunters at the starting point.
  3. Must identify and transmit for a minimum of 20 seconds after each repeater ID. (Currently set at 2 minutes, 30 seconds).
  4. May not change antenna or power level once the foxhunt has begun.
  5. Must hide so that the hunters can drive on a gravel or better roadway, park their cars, and walk no more than 1000 feet to the Fox. Access roads cease to be such when barred by fences, chains, sawhorses or "NO TRESSPASSING" signs.
  6. If the Fox is not on public access property, he must obtain permission from the owner(s), AND post a bull's-eye (approx 24" by 24", minimum of 3 rings with at least 1" width) clearly visible from public access property. PUBLIC ACCESS PROPERTY means property to which the general public has access to at the time of the hunt, or would not require special permission to access. Forest Preserves are considered private property, NOT public access.
  7. May not hide where admission is charged (eg., drive-in, pay sporting event, toll roads, etc.).
  8. Must notify the local police of the foxhunt.
  9. May not use repeaters, remote base stations, or cross-banding.
  10. The Fox is the person operating the transmitter. When asked by a hunter if (s)he is the Fox, the Fox must answer in the affirmative.
  11. The Fox and his crew may not operate other 2 meter transmitters during his transmissions, which could possibly interfere with the hunters' ground gear.
  12. Must note the time and callsign of finishers and write the foxhunt report.

The Hunters

  1. Must check in with the Foxhunt Chairman at the starting point, and identify the name or callsign of their group.
  2. May not leave the starting point until released by the Foxhunt chairman.
  3. In order to finish, must ask for and receive an affirmative answer from the Fox.
  4. Must not transmit while the Fox is on the air.
  5. The winning hunter shall be, or designate, the Fox on the following month's hunt.
